Clementine Jarrett, a third-year student in Human Rights and Social Justice, and Women’s and Gender Studies at Carleton University, is the recipient of the 2023-2024 TELUS Student Bursary.
The bursary, part of the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, supports Canadian youth facing severe financial hardship. It is one of the largest national student bursary funds in Canada. To qualify, applicants must commit to undertaking a social impact initiative during their studies that will positively affect their community, either socially or environmentally.
For Jarrett, attending university once seemed like an unattainable dream. She grew up surrounded by violence and the continuous threat of physical and psychological abuse, enduring extreme financial hardship. Her time in the foster-care system continued to cause her significant distress.
Despite these challenges, Jarrett remained focused on her education. She aspires to attain a Ph.D. and use her lived experiences to transform the child welfare system, aiming to enhance the safety and dignity of children in care and ensure future generations have a different and better experience than she did.
